Admission



When is the application deadline?
The application filing deadline is March 30 (for international applicants) and June 14 (for Indonesian applicants), with all supporting documents. For the Ph.D. program will begin on September. Applications received after March 30 will not be considered; however, supplementary materials such as transcripts and recommendations that are received in early January will be added to existing applicant files.

What are the requirements for admission?

  • Must fill out in English an ICRS application form that includes writing a 1-2 page personal statement and a brief research proposal (no more than 4000 words). See the application form for more detail, which is downloadable here or available by request to admission_icrs@ugm.ac.id
  • Submit complete validated copies of official diplomas and transcripts from all institutions of higher education that you have attended.  For their second degree (S2), applicants should have a grade point average (GPA or IPK) of at least 3.25.  In light of different grading standards of different institutions we will consider applicants whose S2 GPA is 3.25 or above on a 4.0 scale, however our target is to receive applicants with a GPA above 3.4.
  • Submit Institutional (ITP) or International TOEFL scores of at least 475 from UGM or other official language centers (for Indonesian applicants, please go to http://um4.ugm.ac.id/index.php/page/179 to see a list of approved centers.  (Note that TOEFL scores from other than the listed centers will not be accepted by UGM).  The TOEFL scores must be less than two years old.  TOEFL requirements may be substituted with equivalent scores from IELTS (6.5 = 550, minimal 6.0 for consideration). Note that our target score for acceptance is a TOEFL or equivalent score of at least 550. 
  • Applicants with TOEFL scores below 500 cannot be accepted directly into the program.  However applicants with scores between 475 and 525 may be invited to attend a Pre-Ph.D. program in intensive English designed to improve their English ability in preparation for admission.  All students accepted into the Ph.D. program are required to reach a TOEFL score of 550 before they take their Comprehensive Examinations or go on a Sandwich Program to another country.
  • (INDONESIAN ONLY) submit a score of PAPS (Tes Potensi Akademik Pascasarjana) at least 500 from a certified center (Bappenas, Puspendik Litbang Diknas and UGM). If applicants do not have the score during the application, they must take a TPA test conducted by DAA (Directorate of Academic Administration) of UGM.
  • Native English speakers and those who are considered as “Native English Speakers" are not required to submit TOEFL scores.  However, they are encouraged (not required) to submit recent scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or a similar standardized test from their native country.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation, including at least two from professors (dosen) who are qualified to evaluate your academic achievements and potential.  The letters must be on recommendation forms provided by ICRS-Yogya and sent directly by the recommenders to ICRS office or through email: admission_icrs@ugm.ac.id.
  • Students who intend to focus their study on textual research must show competence in at least one of the relevant language(s) of their chosen research (eg. Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Sanskrit, Pali, old Javanese, etc.).  Applicants may petition to have another scriptural language included to fulfill this requirement.
  • Applicants for an ICRS scholarship must fill out a separate financial aid form that must be submitted along with the application.
  • Applicants (INDONESIAN ONLY) who are applying for BPPS scholarship from DIKTI (www.dikti.go.id) or BS scholarship from DIKTIS (www. kemenag.go.id) must fulfil and complete all the documents required by each scholarship. 

How much is the application fee and what is the method of payment?
Our application fee is IDR 750.000 for Indonesia students or USD $100 for foreign students, and it is non-refundable. Please send a copy of your money transfer along with the application form.'

What degree do I need to apply? Must my undergraduate work be in economics?
An applicant only needs an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university from around the world. It is not essential that the bachelor’s degree be in inter religion study, but some preparation in undergraduate inter religion is a necessity.
 
Is there a minimum TOEFL score requirement?
For the TOEFL, the Faculty’s minimum requirement is 550 from Universitas Gadjah Mada or other official language centers. Applicants with scores above 500 may be considered. If a student is accepted with a TOEFL of less than 550, they must take intensive English classes and may not take their Comprehensive Examinations before achieving a TOEFL score of at least 550.   

When do my TOEFL scores expire?
Your TOEFL score will be considered expired if the test was taken more than two years prior to the application deadline. The TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

Is the TOEFL score is required for all applicants?
No. Native English speakers and those who are considered as “Native English Speakers" are not required to submit TOEFL scores.  However, they are encouraged (not required) to submit recent scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or a similar standardized test from their native country.

What tests do you require?
The Faculty requires non-native English speakers must take an English test to determine whether or not they are required to take English classes before registering.

How is the screening procedure like?
The Admissions Committee will screen all application mainly based on submitted material. There is no an interview via email/telephone conducted.

When can I expect to be notified about an admission decision?
All applicants will be notified of whether or not they are accepted, by 31 July. Candidates have one week to notify the ICRS of their decisions. Successful applicants should sign a statement that they will be full-time students in residence at ICRS for at least the first two years, or until they complete their language requirements and Comprehensive Examinations.

Can an applicant who was not accepted into the program request information as to why they were not accepted?
Due to the large volume of qualified applicants to the International Graduate Program in Inter-religious Study and the small number of students accepted, we are unable to give specifics as to why an application was denied.
