CALL FOR APPLICATIONS : An International Ph.D. Program in Inter-religious Studies

The Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS-Yogya), an International Ph.D. Program in Inter-religious Studies, sponsored by Gadjah Mada University, State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga, and Duta Wacana Christian University, is now open for applications. The Program is conducted in English. The Ph.D. Program takes four years and includes one semester at a leading foreign university.

ICRS-Yogya offers research opportunities in many areas connected with the study of religion in Asia, including:
1. Cultural and Historical Studies of Religion
2. Religion and Contemporary Issues
3. Comparative Interpretation of Sacred Texts

What are the requirements for admission?

  • A first degree (S1) from an accredited institution in any subject
  • A Master's degree (S2) from an accredited institution in a subject related to the anticipated field of research
  • A S2 grade point average (GPA or IP) of at least 3.40 on a 4.00 scale
  • An institutional or international TOEFL (or IELTS equiv.) of at least 550. Applicants with scores above 500 may be considered
  • Applicants who intend to focus their study on textual research must show competence in at least one of the relevant language(s) of their chosen field (e.g. Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Sanskrit, Pali, old Javanese, etc.)
  • Three academic letters of recommendation on ICRS-Yogya forms
  • Fill out an ICRS-Yogya application form
  • Students must be full-time and resident in Yogya for at least 2 years

Scholarships from the Ford Foundation and UBCHEA are available (including a 6 month sandwich program at a foreign university) for deserving students. Students must fill out a financial aid application form and submit it along with their application.

The deadline for applications is 28 February 2009. Late applicants will not be considered.
